La Blogotheque’s Take-Away Shows

If you are not already familiar with La Blogotheque’s Take Away Shows, then quickly become acquainted.  French indie-filmmaker Vincent Moon helmed the series, which contains impromptu live performances by bands accompanied by Moon’s highly saturated, rugged video footage.  The videos are shot in unique locations, mostly in and around Paris, but other cities have been included as well (New York, LA, Montreal).  Most of the artists rely only on acoustic guitars and simple percussion, inspiring creativity in these one-take performances.  Moon has done around 100 sets of these videos, and lately other filmmakers have also gotten in on the Take Away Shows.

Featured bands include Yo La Tengo, Animal Collective, Vampire Weekend, The National, Grizzly Bear, Bon Iver, The Antlers, and Fleet Foxes.  After Beirut participated in two videos for Take Away Shows, Vincent Moon got together with Zach Condon and created a video for every song on Beirut’s The Flying Club Cup album.  If you’re a Beirut fan you can watch all the videos on-line and buy it on DVD.  Not only are bands the main feature, but sometimes a series of Take Away Shows are constructed to include an entire city’s music scene, featuring only bands from that particular city, such as the “Views of Montreal” and “Cities Series” (Rennes, FR).  All of the Take Away Shows are highly original, creative, and beautifully constructed, they show a side of bands that you don’t get to see by just playing an album at home.

Below are videos by Beirut, Yo La Tengo, and Vampire Weekend.

Beirut – Nantes

Yo La Tengo – With a Girl Like You (Troggs Cover)/Our Way to Fall

Vampire Weekend – Mansford Roof/Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa
